123: 2nd Reoccurring Guest--How to Save Rare Plants?

Protecting Minnesota's Rare Plants: A Conversation with Addie Theis

In this episode of the Flora Funga podcast, I welcome back Addie Theis Paradis, a natural resource specialist, to discuss her vital work with rare plants in Minnesota. As a certified Wetland Delineator, Addie has expanded her focus to include rare plant surveys, an essential task for protecting endangered species in the state.

The Role of Rare Plant Surveys

Addie explains that Minnesota is home to 309 protected plant species, including 86 endangered, 93 threatened, and 130 of special concern. These plants are safeguarded under the Endangered Species Act, with Minnesota offering broader protections than federal regulations. Addie’s job involves conducting surveys before construction projects begin, identifying rare plants, and ensuring they are either preserved in place or restored elsewhere.

A successful example of this work involved the Butternut tree, an endangered species threatened by a fungal infection. During a road project, two sick trees were removed, but 500 new Butternuts were planted as part of a restoration effort, demonstrating how conservation and development can coexist.

Climate Change and Human Impact

Addie also discusses the effects of climate change and human activity on Minnesota's rare plants. Shifts in climate are altering plant distributions, while agricultural and urban development continue to reduce natural habitats. Rare plants like the Western Prairie Fringed Orchid, which relies on specific rainfall patterns, are particularly vulnerable to these changes.

How You Can Help

Addie encourages listeners to get involved in protecting rare plants by educating themselves through resources like the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website. Joining local organizations, participating in citizen science programs, or even simple actions like removing invasive species can make a big difference.

Highlighting Minnesota's Unique Flora

Addie shares her excitement about two specific rare plants:

  1. Iowa Golden Saxifrage: Found in Southeast Minnesota, this tiny, endangered plant thrives in cold, rocky slopes known as talus slopes.

  2. Prairie Quillwort: A fern ally that grows in the rocky outcroppings of Southwest Minnesota, requiring very specific conditions to survive.

Conclusion

Addie’s work is crucial in safeguarding Minnesota's rare plant species. By raising awareness and encouraging community involvement, we can all play a part in preserving the state's unique and diverse plant life.
